Buying poe switches: what to look for
A PoE (Power over Ethernet) switch sends power and data down one network cable, so access points and IP cameras don't need a power socket where they are mounted.
Check two numbers: the number of PoE ports and the total PoE budget in watts. A typical WiFi 6 access point draws around 10-20 W, so add up your devices and leave some headroom.
Questions
PoE or PoE+?
PoE (802.3af) gives up to about 15 W per port; PoE+ (802.3at) gives up to about 30 W. Most WiFi 6 access points need PoE+ for full performance.
Can I power CCTV cameras from these?
Yes, standard 802.3af/at IP cameras work with these switches. Check the camera's power figure against the switch's PoE budget.
